OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research and deployment company based in San Francisco. It was founded in 2015 as a non-profit research lab and later restructured around a capped-profit arm, which is the entity that ships its commercial products.

Its work reached the general public with ChatGPT, a conversational interface to its GPT series of large language models. The same models are sold to developers through an API, and to businesses as enterprise products, which is where most of the company's revenue is reported to come from.
